Booking a magician

: The most important thing is to make sure you book a professional. An amateur or part-time magician maybe able to perform amazing magic but there is a lot more to it than that. Will they turn up on time? Will they be smartly presented? Will they work hard to make sure they see every guest? Will they have the experience to cope with any last minute changes? Remember that if you are hosting or organising an event, the magician you choose will reflect on you. In the same way, a professional magician who's livelihood depends on performing regularly will look after all the small details because it reflects on them and their prospects of getting more work. How do you know someone is a professional? After all, anyone can say they are but what can you do to check that it's true? How to Spot a Professional Magician Check that the magician has a good website and/ or printed promotional materials. These days, magicians often rely on a website to provide information to prospective clients because it is so easy to keep a website up to date. Many also have videos or DVDs and printed materials including photographs. Of course, this doesn't make them a great magician but it does indicate their professionalism. It can also give you an idea of what a performer is like if you haven't met them. Check that the magician is a member of magic societies such as the Magic Circle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. These societies require magicians to be serious and accomplished performers before they are allowed membership. Another good sign is if they are a member of an organisation like Equity, the UK performers union or similar professional body. Check the magician's list of clients and engagements, and testimonial/ recommendation letters. A professional magician should be able to provide details of past clients and engagements - if they can't something is wrong. The types of events they have been involved with will indicate if they are the right magician for your event. The letters and quotes can be helpful, although it is unlikely that any bad quotes will find their way into someone's promotional materials! However, the number and quality of the quotes should give you an idea of how well received a performer is. Don't be afraid to ask for copies of the original letters or emails. Check that the magician has public liability insurance. This is very important! The magician may be closely interacting with your guests, perhaps borrowing objects from them and a professional will be covered for any accidents that may happen. Is a Particular Professional Magician Right for You? So, you've found a professional magician. How do you know they are right for you and your event? Obviously, seeing them perform is the best way. Often a magician will work regularly at a restaurant or club, or even have a regular stage show and this is a great opportunity to see them in action. However, some magicians only perform at corporate and private functions and you may not be able to see them in public. Promotional materials and information about past clients and engagement should give you a pretty good idea what they are like, but a quick phone call is the best way. Have a chat with them, ask them what their performance style is like and what types of magical effects they perform. If you like what you hear and can get on with them over the phone, it's a good sign. Price and Negotiating a Fee Often the main factor when deciding which magician to choose is price. Fees for professional magicians vary a lot because they depend on many factors such as the date and time of the event, how well known the magician is, what type of magic you want them to perform, how long you want them for, etc. But, as with most other services and products, you get what you pay for. Good magical entertainment is not something that you can get cheaply. If you are shopping around and enquiring with many magicians, going with the cheapest may not be the best option! When negotiating the fee it can be a good idea to be up front and state what the available budget is. This could save both you and the magician a lot of time. If one magician is too expensive or is not available, they may be able to suggest another magician or entertainer for your event. Their opinion is worthwhile, since they should be well aware how good other magicians are and suggesting someone unprofessional would reflect badly on them. Finally, remember to check whether the fee you negotiate is fully inclusive and that there are no hidden extras such as VAT or travelling expenses. Note: This article is written from a UK perspective, but many of these tips will be relevant in other countries.

5 Steps to get your priorities straight at home and in business

Operating a successful home-based business is a time-consuming endeavor. This is doubly true as work-at-home moms in that we are responsible not only for the success of our business, but for our family as well. We must be self-reliant, self-motivated, and discipline ourselves in order to attain success in both areas. When running a business from home, it’s easy to let the phone calls, emails and paperwork keep you tied down, making you feel that you don’t have time to take a break or to spend quality time with your family. Maybe you’ve noticed that you spend a little more time than you’d like in front of your computer or on the phone. Maybe you see your kids acting out, trying to gain your attention. Perhaps you are seeing that this isn’t the work-at-home dream you envisioned. You started out with such noble intentions, but maybe the excitement of success in your business has caused you to lose sight of the REAL reason do what you do each day. It happens to so many of us, but don’t worry, help is on the way. Below are five ideas to prioritize your life and business: 1. Be honest - You probably didn’t start your work-at-home career to climb the “corporate ladder” of your at-home business. Chances are that you started your business with the best of intentions – to be able to be at home with your children, to contribute financially to your family, or simply to have a little spending money of your own. Spend some time in prayer and ask the Lord to show you the things that you need to change. Take a moment and honestly ask yourself how you’ve been handling the time commitment of owning a business: • Are you spending too much time on the phone, the computer, etc? • Are your kids spending more time than usual in front of the TV? • Do you snap at your children because of the stresses of your business? • Do you worry about your business – to the point that it distracts you when you are with your family? 2. Make a list – Sit down and write out a list of things that you see that you’d like to change. This can be a list of things you can do differently to limit the time you spend on your business; or a list of ways you can “de-stress” so that you can deal kindly with your family. 3. Log your time – Buy a notebook or create a spreadsheet that you can use to log the time you spend on your business each day. Make a column for each day across the top and a row of half an hour increments down the side. Every time you sit down at your desk, write “IN” in the box that corresponds to the time and day. Every time you leave your desk (or complete a task), fill the appropriate box with the word “OUT.” At the end of the week, total up the hours each day that you have spent on business tasks. Are you surprised or is it about where you thought you’d be? This can be a real eye-opener and show you in black and white if your priorities have gotten off track. Take special note for how much time you spend on e-mails and things that aren’t billable. Diana Ennen of Virtual Word Publishing, virtualwordpublishing also recommends that you plan ahead and schedule your time. Prioritize things and have the work that will require the most effort and concentration scheduled for your peak time. Try and not get sidetracked and stay on task focusing on what you need to do. You’d be amazed how much more work you can get done by simply changing how you work e-mails. If you only answer them at set hours, you save yourself from being online all day and not accomplishing much. 4. Take a break – If you get to the end of the week and your time log has you in shock, it’s time to take a break. If you normally work during the weekend, make it a point to take this weekend off. Shut down your email, turn off the ringer on your phone and shut the door to your office. You’ll be surprised at how refreshing this will be. Use this time off to re-evaluate how you need to be spending your time. Try to plan out when you can work on your business without losing out on time with your children. If your children are in school, make it a point to stop working when they get home. If your children are still small, maybe you can limit work hours to naptime or, if possible, have a grandparent watch them once or twice a week to allow you a bit more work time. 5. Plan an activity – Now that you’re ready to make a change in your routine, why not plan an activity once a week? This can be an outing with your child or just something simple like setting aside time to make cookies together. If possible, find another work-at-home mom and hold one another accountable to keep to your new schedules. Make a weekly play date where your children can spend time together – you can talk business if necessary or decide to make it a “no business talk allowed” discussion time. The years that you have at home with your children are a gift as is your business. The time necessary for each will be different for every family and situation. Take the time to find what works for you and set your schedule accordingly. Make it a point to evaluate your priorities every few months to make sure that your time in spent properly. The rewards will be well worth it, when your family not only is proud of your accomplishments in your business, but also more importantly your accomplishments as their mom. Why bounced cheques mean bad business

Small businesses rely heavily on maintaining a good cash flow and having their clients pay on time. So when half of the UK's small businesses are suffering from poor cash flow that is bad news for small businesses. Recent research shows that small, medium and large companies have had many bounced cheques. Micro companies, with less than 10 employees, have been less affected. One way in which this can happen is when someone pays a business by cheque for goods or services. The business pays it into their bank. The prudent business owner checks that the cheque has cleared and writes out new cheques based on the money that is in the business bank account. It later turns out that the cheque hadn't cleared at all and the business owner is now overdrawn and in debt. This means steep bank charges and makes it less likely that business facilities will be extended in the future. Understanding The Cheque Clearing System Most people know that a cheque takes anywhere from three to seven working days to clear. The date that a cheque clears depends on: 1. The currency that the cheque is in. Sterling cheques in the UK clear more quickly than cheques in French francs, for example. 2. Whether the bank that has issued the cheque is in the same group of companies as the bank the cheque is being paid into. Cheques usually take longer to clear when paid outside the banking group. 3. Whether the cheque is paid in on a business day. What most people don't know is that most banks 'clear' cheques when the normal clearing period has elapsed. This sometimes happens before the bank has verified that the funds are available. The bank makes the amount of the cheque available for withdrawal but it hasn't really cleared. Some unscrupulous people can use this to their advantage. For example, they could pay by cheque for goods or services, write the wrong amount on the cheque, ask for a refund and disappear with the money well before the cheque clearing process is complete. When the original cheque bounces, it is the small business that is left facing an angry bank manager and a large bill. Payment Help For Businesses Luckily, there are other ways for businesses to receive money from their customers. The first is the Banks Automated Clearing System (BACS). This is a secure system in which payments take only three days to clear. This system is commonly used to pay salary cheques directly to employee's bank accounts. A more costly system (with fees around Ј25 per transaction) is the Clearing House Automated Payment System (CHAPS). This system allows same day electronic money transfers. Business owners who are worried about being left with a large debt should consider getting their customers to pay by one of these systems where possible. This will reduce the high business cost of bounced cheques.

When to start seeking a mortgage for a new purchase

You have made the decision to buy a home and start looking at properties. Before you get rolling, you should start trying to find the best mortgage option for your situation. When To Start Seeking A Mortgage For A New Purchase Most people begin shopping for a mortgage at the last minute and settle for the first offer they get. This is an absolutely terrible thing to do. A house is one of the most important things you will ever be able to own and getting a mortgage on that house, or, more correctly, getting the best mortgage possible on that house is only too important. The only way you will be able to find that perfect mortgage is to shop around. Obviously, this means that you should begin looking as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute to search for mortgage options, rather leave yourself as much time as possible to go through as many lenders as you can and see what each has to offer. Every lender is different and will provide different plans with different rates and different things tied to those mortgage plans. You need time to go through all of these different offers and sort out the good from the bad. If you don’t have perfect credit, use a mortgage broker to find the best deal. This is all they do, so they can give you a huge head start. If you wait until the last minute to find a mortgage you will be forced to settle on one early and can end up costing yourself tens of thousands of dollars in the long run. One percentage point of interest might seem like a small amount, but when that one percentage point is used on a mortgage of hundreds of thousands of dollars based over 20 to 30 years, that one percentage point can end up equaling tens of thousands of dollars! That money is all interest that is being paid to the lender. You have better uses for your money, don’t allow a lender to take more from you than he has to. Shop around and find the lowest interest rate and best mortgage plan possible. It is advised to begin shopping for a mortgage as soon as you decide that you might be interested in purchasing a home. You don’t have to get too serious, but check out the major banks and lenders that you know of to start with. Lay some groundwork and get some feedback. Start making some goals of how much you will need and what sort of interest rate you want. It is highly advisable to get pre-approved for a loan if at all possible. Keep these things in mind and shop around to find the best plan possible.

11 Reasons to submit this article to an ezine

What's an article anyway, and why would I want to submit one to an ezine? That was a two-fold question and will require two answers. An ezine article is usually composed of approximately 500 words on a single subject that would be of interest to your target market. At the end of the article, you should include a "resource box." This box should provide such things as your name, the name of your company, your web site address, email address, and a small blurb about your product/service. Writing an article is not hard work. All it requires is some research and note taking. Use any of multiple sources to find information about the topic that you choose to write about. Then write your article in your own words using the notes that you took during your research. It's not difficult and it's something that you learned to do early in school (grade school probably). Write in a conversational tone. Write like you are talking to your best friend. Now, I'll answer the second question. The reasons to submit this article to an ezine are varied, but not difficult to understand. They all boost your bottom line. 1. The submission of the article will help identify your business (web site) in the Internet marketplace. This is normally called "branding." 2. Article submission provides publicity, virtually free. 3. Someone may like your writing style and hire you to write articles or ebooks for them. 4. The published article will drive traffic to your web site. 5. If the publisher of the ezine that you submit your article to maintains an archive, your article may be read many months later. Traffic may still be driven to your site this way. 6. People will come to know you as an expert on your subject. 7. You might get your article published in free ebooks that are distributed all over the web. This will drive more traffic to your web site. 8. This will help you become a trusted vendor of information. 9. If you allow anyone to publish your article or email it to a friend, you will gain further exposure for free. 10. Webmasters may read your article and display it on their web site. You get additional free exposure. 11. If you send out an ezine, you could offer to swap articles with other ezine publishers for free. This provides more publicity without expense. So, there are quite a few benefits that you could receive from publishing small articles like this one. If that isn't enough reasons for publishing your own articles, I don't know what else you'd need. Don't forget to provide enough valuable information. The more knowledge you supply, the more valuable you become. Provide real value and you will always have people clamoring for more.

Eczema instigator the itch

Skin irritation skin disorder skin ailment, call it what you like but eczema is an eruption of the skin causing pain and suffering to millions worldwide. Eczema comes in many different forms. One of the most common is the type suffered by babies and children called atopic eczema. Eczema is a skin complaint which can maliciously cover the whole body. Dry patches of scaly crusted scabby like clusters mounded in a clump or red pimply like sores are just a few to mention of how eczema displays its self on the skin (not in all cases) severity of this nature most definitely needs medical attention and the reason is because if unattended the sufferer gets to prolong their agony by scratching. After an attack on the skin with fingernails expect the infected area to become wet after the oozing clear fluid which sometimes consists of specks of blood settles around the open pierced skin A skin complaint like eczema can flare up at any time through a number of reasons. As the years pass us by our skin starts to thin and becomes drier thus contributing to vulnerability of eczema affecting us in the ripe old years. Then we have allergies developed from exposure to things we find that does not agree with the skin hence allergic reactions. The instigator behind why the scratching takes place is the distressing symptom (The Itch) a patient does more harm than good by scrawbing away at the flesh seeking contentment in easing the itch. Damage done by scratching can result in an open wound prone to infection. Some types of eczema can be surrounded by a redness which changes colour e. g. from bright red to barely showing at all. Because eczema is normally dry and scaly it prevents and reduces the quality of the skin and its performance in doing what nature intended and that being is to protect against heat cold and all forms of bacterial infections. Medical treatment is advisable in every type of eczema whether it mild or severe. Hospital admissions have been imminent in some cases where the human body has been ravished by this complaint or where infection has set in after a fingernail beheads a pimply spot. The largest organ weighing in at approx four kilograms is the skin. A great many people are unaware and intend to ignore the skin and its needs. The skin like any other part of the body needs attention. The hair is nourished with conditioner the teeth with toothpaste so why not the skin. This coverage of about two square metres covering the human body has to stand up to appalling weather conditions/bumps/knocks and itching. Remember the skin is your border line with the environment which is not in the very best of health at the moment. So while environmental friendly activists fight a good cause to stamp out pollution then please protect the skin. Medication for eczema should be prescribed by your doctor because what you think may be eczema may just not be.
